LG’s Windows Phone 7 Series unveiled

The Engadget Show is never short of surprises and pleasant announcements. Today’s Engadget Show was no different. Microsoft’s Aaron Woodman appeared at the show and he was not alone. He brought LG’s first Windows Phone 7 Series device with him, the pre-production prototype anyway. More on the Windows Phone 7 after the jump.

Here is what is known of LG’s first WM7 device:

Stealing Content Can Go Ugly

People in Pakistan are getting aware of copyrights, either by softly spoken advises or otherwise through legal ways.
We had reported this incident of FIA raiding mag4you.com offices and picking their admins.
Here is a new case under prosecution, and people those uploaded pirated music are in tough situation.
This may mark an end of copyright violation, particularly by those large portals. We have mentioned few in past, and there are others in line for a lawsuit, including ApniIsp and FunMaza.
On one side, there are people saying to teach the law first instead of implementing it right away because of influential hands, however, there is no doubt that copyright violators are no kids – they earn good bucks with this pirated content and ultimately causing financial loss to the legitimate owner.

Indian Propaganda Against Pakistan on Telecom Front

Time of India has reported that fraudulent calls are being originated from Pakistan that appears to be involved in lottery scams, victimizing Indian mobile phone users. Though newspaper admits that technology can be used to change the phone number.
Newspaper further claims that allegedly these callers from Pakistan have access to subscribers’ database of cellular operator Bharti Airtel.
In a general advisory to all mobile/landline users, Airtel has urged subscribers to avoid responding to suspicious calls from unknown numbers, especially those beginning with +92.
Now this is interesting that fraudulent premium IDD calls are being made from Pakistan against very low commissions, as described by Times of India. It said that fraudsters ask for DTH recharge which is way below the viable ROI for the model.
All mobile operators in Pakistan are offering in range of Rs. 6 to Rs. 10 per min call charges for India.
On our part, PTA must come in action and should investigate if any such calls are made in abundance to India or not? If yes then culprits must be shown the bars, otherwise, this claim by Indian operator should be dealt accordingly.

Earlier today I came across this news playing on GEO television network where they showed an email sent from PM cell. The address was mentioned as pmmediaoffice [at] gmail.com.
Went into shock and awe. The government official channel is using GMAIL account. What is going on here? Thought it was some kinda mistake so I just googled the email address and I found the exact email address. Exact Match!!.

PTA Issues Deadline to WLL Licensees for Network Rollout

Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) has asked Wireless Local Loop licensees to roll out their networks in the allocated regions until March 20 in order to avoid cancellation of their licenses.
Super dialogue and Metroltel was asked by PTA to deploy their infrastructure in the licensed regions on the new deadline after they failed to commence mandatory operations.
PTA has granted license to these operators in November 2004 to establish, maintain and operate a Telecommunication System in Gujrawala and Rawalpindi Telecom Regions.

Walmart buys Vudo and promptly shuts down adult section

In what really isn’t a surprising move given their much publicized store policies, just days after buying streaming video provider Vudu, Walmart has announced it is shutting down it’s After Dark service, which discreetly provided hundreds of adult films to its subscribers. The service was the only major service with such a large and up to date library.

Walmart is well known for censoring music, movies, books and magazines sold in their stores. They insist that any CD carrying a Parental Advisory be edited, and that every movie with an NC-17 rating being edited to an R. They refuse to carry magazines like Stuff and Maxim, cover up mags like Cosmo and Redbook, and refuse to carry any unrated “Director’s Cut” movies.

Given those practices I suppose the closing of After Dark was expected, but I’m sure there are some unhappy customers out there!

Bug causes Facebook messages to misfire

An unknown number of Facebook users had their messages sent to the wrong people for a while on Wednesday after a computer problem, the social-networking company said Thursday.

"During our regular code push yesterday evening, a bug caused some misrouting to a small number of users for a short period of time," a Facebook spokesperson said in an e-mail statement. "Our engineers diagnosed the problem moments after it began and worked diligently to get everything back in its rightful place. While they fixed the issue, affected users were not be able to access the site."

The spokesperson did not say how many people were affected or how long the problem lasted.

Facebook still pitching itself to open-source crowd

MIAMI--The overwhelmingly young and male audience at the Future of Web Apps (FOWA) event this week tells you that it's one of those conferences where the attendees don't tend to be marketers, finance guys, or advertisers: they're the kids who write the code.

A company like Facebook obviously wants to be there, and at past FOWA events it's used the soapbox opportunity to market developer initiatives like its application platform and Facebook Connect log-in tool. But this year the focus was instead on open source, with relatively recent hire David Recordon taking the stage rather than a platform evangelist. Recordon, who spearheaded the launch of the Open Web Foundation, is Facebook's first really prominent open-source guru, and when it comes to Facebook's marketing pitches, the open-source guys have taken a little more coaxing than the iPhone developers or widget-builders.

Facebook to developers: Get ready for Credits

Facebook's virtual currency, "Facebook Credits," is getting very close to its full launch: a post on the Facebook developer blog explains some of the full terms of the system and what developers can expect as the currency continues to roll out slowly.

"Today more than 500,000 applications exist on Facebook, and the virtual goods within those applications (particularly games) have become an increasingly valuable part of the user experience," the post explained. "By providing a single, cross-application currency, our goal is to [make] transactions simpler for users, leading to a higher conversion rate for developers. Specifically, our early testing has shown that users paying with Facebook Credits are significantly more likely to complete a purchase than the average Facebook user."

T-Mobile boosts prepaid market, loses subscribers

T-Mobile USA gained ground in signing up new subscribers during the fourth quarter, but much of the surge came from its prepaid business.

T-Mobile USA parent company Deutsche Telekom reported earnings on Thursday. The U.S. carrier, the smallest of the big four nationwide carriers, said it added a total of 371,000 new subscribers in the fourth quarter. This is an improvement over customer losses from the third quarter. But it's still lower than customer gains the company saw in the fourth quarter of 2008.

In total, T-Mobile USA now has 33.8 million subscribers, up from 33.4 million in the third quarter and 32.8 million in the fourth quarter of 2008.

Why Can’t PCs Work More Like iPhones?

Back in the dark ages of personal computing, if you wanted to look through the programs on your machine and, say, open a Microsoft Word document from the floppy drive, you would need to type a list of arcane commands that went something like this:

In an effort to win over less technical users, both Apple and Microsoft dumped that command-line interface for personal computers more than two decades ago, replacing it with visual icons for files, folders and applications. Over the years, they added animations and search technology and other features to make navigating a Mac or Windows PC even easier.

Gmail runs into importing issues Thursday

Google encountered problems with Gmail Thursday morning for a "significant subset" of users using POP to get messages into Gmail.

The company posted a notice on its Apps Status Dashboard that was picked up by Techcrunch notifying Gmail users of "difficulties or delays receiving mail fetched via POP from external mail providers to Gmail." The problems began at some point this morning, and a more recent notice said that Google has fixed the problem for "a majority" of users.

Google said your e-mails that get imported from other accounts aren't lost; they're just not making it into your Gmail account in the usual fashion, and should be delivered when the problems ease. At some point mid-morning Gmail abruptly dumped a bunch of e-mails into my Gmail inbox that are usually imported relatively quickly from another account, some of which were over a day old.

Everything appears to be working on my end now, but let us know if you're having problems. After a few high-profile interruptions in service during 2009, it's been relatively quiet on the Apps Status Dashboard so far in 2010.

Mobile carriers, Google defend cancellation fees

U.S. mobile operators, , in letters sent to the Federal Communications Commission earlier this week, defended their use of early termination fees and explained how they are informing consumers about their policies.

In January, the FCC asked each of the four major wireless carriers, AT&T, Verizon Wireless, Sprint Nextel, and T-Mobile USA, along with Google to detail how they inform customers of their fees in statements on corporate Web sites, in brochures and sales scripts, and in monthly bills. The companies had until February 23 to respond. Earlier this week, they filed their answers to the FCC's questions.

More developments coming to Twitter 'geo API'

Pretty soon, you'll be able to learn a bit more about where your Twitter contacts' tweets are coming from.

CNET has learned that select third-party developers were informed earlier this week about some forthcoming modifications to Twitter's "geo API," the set of developer tools that currently allows Twitter messages to be accompanied by the latitude and longitude coordinates of where they were posted. (For example, if you're updating Twitter client Tweetie from your iPhone, you can opt to tag the tweet with your location and it'll be visible to people reading your Twitter feed.)

Key senators do not see climate bill in 2010

The U.S. Senate is unlikely to pass a comprehensive climate change bill to reduce greenhouse gas emissions this year, according to a Reuters survey of 12 key Democrat and Republican Senators who could hold the swing votes.

While the Obama administration and a bipartisan core of senators still hope there is life for a climate change bill that would put a price on carbon emissions and help reinvigorate ailing international talks, the senators interviewed by Reuters this week were much more pessimistic.

The survey underscores that global warming--a scientific finding still hotly disputed by many Americans--could end up being set aside by politicians focusing on issues that hold more appeal to voters ahead of congressional elections in November.

Facebook eats up patents for the 'feed'

Facebook this week was awarded a patent pertaining to streaming "feed" technology, more specifically "dynamically providing a news feed about a user of a social network," complementing another patent filing that has been published but not yet approved.

The implications for this, as AllFacebook.com pointed out earlier on Thursday, are far-flung: Facebook may choose to pursue action against other social-media sites that potentially violate this patent. Twitter, as AllFacebook points out, is effectively one giant news feed, to the extent that it clearly has influenced some of the changes that Facebook made to its own feed technology.

That reaction could be alarmist. And yet prominent figures elsewhere in the social-media world don't seem thrilled.

BOYNTON BEACH, Fla.--In a windowless second-floor office in the stucco building that houses the Boynton Beach Police Department about an hour north of Miami, there's a computer monitor on the back wall displaying a full-screen version of Twitter client TweetDeck.

"Lots of real estate listings," commented Stephanie Slater, the BBPD's public information officer and chief media spokesperson, sitting in front of the monitor. "A few people are just tweeting news headlines about what's going on in town. Nothing really."

Slater, a former cop-beat reporter for the local Palm Beach Post, was keeping tabs on a Twitter search query for Boynton Beach to see what users of the chatty service are saying about the city of 65,000. She's also in charge of maintaining the police department's own Twitter account, its Facebook fan page, and its library of YouTube videos. As law enforcement's role in the social-media universe has increasingly become a topic of discussion and debate, the BBPD has become one of the first police departments in the country to step forward and say that they think they've figured it out.

Information Technology park launched in Lahore

President of Pakistan inaugurated the fully operational Information Technology Park Shaheen Complex Lahore on January 16, 2010 in Governor House Lahore. PSEB, Shaheen Foundation and MOIT jointly arranged a post inauguration session on January 19, 2010 at Shaheen Complex Lahore at 05:00 pm. Telenor Easy Paisa is Back, with a New Product

PTA launches SMS based Information System for educational institutes in Pakistan

Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) has started a project named “SMS-based Information System” for educational institutions, to equip them with an interactive mobile application for broadcasting important information to students and their guardians on their mobile phones. It is a system of sending SMS by using computer software developed by PTA. It has been noted that usually management of educational institutions relies on mail-correspondence with guardians, which is costly and time consuming. PTA would provide this software free of cost to educational institutions across the country.

PTA to incept new SIM activation system

Chairman Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA), Dr. Mohammed Yaseen, has said that all arrangements have been finalized for the inception of new system for issuance of non-activated SIMs and their activation after verification from February 01, 2009.

He said this during a visit to Call Center and Customer Services Center of CM Pak Mobile (Zong) here today. On this occasion Chairman PTA witnessed the demonstration of new system of activation of mobile phone SIMs and enquired about the verification process. He asked questions about the new system from the Call Center representatives. Deputy CEO China Mobile Mr. Zafar Usmani briefed him about the preparation for this system and showed his satisfaction on it.

81,945 Cellphones Snatched in One Year: CPLC

CPLC has recently published the report on the cell phones snatched/theft incidents. According to their data which they collected from February 2009 to January 2010, a total of 36377 cell phones were reported snatched or theft. Those snatch/stolen incidents which were never reported are other than this figure.

CPLC has compiled their data according to areas, brands and colors in the following manner:

• Samsung has been most stolen mobile after Nokia. Nokia made almost 75% of total snatched/stolen phones
• Snatchers like Black color mobile phones more. Or let’s put it this way, there are more black phones in the country than any other color. A total of 77.4% snatched cellphones were of Black in color.
• 44.4% of the incidents occurred in Karachi alone

Zong to Charge Missed Calls Alerts

Missed calls alerts is a service which allows mobile phone users to get SMS notification of missed calls in case mobile was switched off/ out of network coverage, busy or no reply. Miss Call Alerts can be very handy, particularly, if you don’t afford to miss each incoming call on your cell phone.

Zong MCA (Missed call alerts) service was also free till today. As Zong has decided to charge this service at Rs. 10 plus tax per month. Following message confirms the imposition of charges:
